for dog breeding, do the dogs mate before or after the female dog is actualy bleeding on her cycle?
its a siberian husky, and i have worked with animals all my life and have had many other animal litters (rabbits, hampsters and lizards) but do not know about dogs, and i had a male over when my female was on her second heat and she played with him but didnt want him to mount her, and i dont know if it was because it was not the right time, or she didnt like him or what

If you don’t know then why are you attempting to breed? Do teh dog world a favour and have them both desexed. We already have too many clueless people breeding dogs for no reason.

Dogs will mate towards the end of the cycle. On about day 14 or so for most dogs. If she didn’t want him to mount her, then she’s not ready. When they’re ready to be bred the dog will know it, and allow the male dog to mount her.

It’s hard to know as some females don’t bleed enough to even be able to tell. She probably wasn’t ready, but a few females will refuse one male only to breed with another. Be sure your girl is at least 2 years of age and passed all of her health tests. The male should also be be health tested, as well as checked for STD’s that he may pass to your girl during breeding.

Usually the most fertile time is between the 11th and 18th day of her cycle (the 11th - 18th day from the start of bleeding). Not all dogs are the same, some will concieve early, others later.
But most importantly, both the dogs will know when its the right time to mate and most females won’t stand for the male until she is ready (most fertile).
Hope this helps!
