i know there is alot that goes into breeding animals. i was wondering how do breeders choose a mate for a dog?

for example i am wondering about pomeranians. one day in the future (long time from now) i would like to mabey start breeding, i love poms. I know there is alot more that goes into choosing certain dogs to breed, but one thing in particular i wanted to know was how mates are choosen based on color. like in pomeranians are there certain colors that are only supposed to breed with each other? i know there a colors of breed standard, but i just wonder how exactly they go about choosing a good match.

My best, most honest advice is to contact the Pom club from the http://www.akc.org website, and ask for a mentor. Every bred has things that are specific to them that only a very experienced, reputable breeder will know. I really appreciate you being willing to take the time to learn before bringing more dogs into the world. People who are wanting to be responsible breeders should get all the help they need. I know that the Pom club would be a big help to you. Also try looking for a group on Yahoo groups that is related to poms. Good luck, and I hope to se you breeding top quality poms some day.

I don’t think poms are a breed where color is a particular concern when choosing which dogs to breed. In some breeds (such as any breed where merle occurs) breeding certain colors together can cause debilitating or even fatal defects to occur in puppies…but I don’t know if poms are one of those breeds.

Even in breeds where certain colors shouldn’t be bred together to prevent fatal defects there are generally far more important concerns than color. Correct conformation, excellent temperament, and a lack of genetic/health defects (such as luxating patella, heart disease, allergies) should be the major factors in choosing breeding stock. A pretty color should just be the icing on the cake, so to speak.

With breeding it’s about conformation, performance and temperament. Most reputable breeders will show their dogs in breed classes to prove their dogs are worthy of being bred. Other breeders will choose a dog or B**** based on the amount of championship titles they have. There is also the need to be certain that hips and elbows are x-rayed and rated as good by the OFA. If you prefer a certain color, you will want to breed another animal of that color to ensure the puppies also are that. Otherwise, depending upon whether the color is a recessive or dominant trait the puppies may come out some other color in a mixed pairing.
